Rice cultivation in our area began with the reclamation of the lagoons in the early 1900s, which transformed large areas of water into cultivable land. This was made possible by the creation of an extensive network of canals and water pumps to lift the water and discharge it into the sea.

Much of the Jolanda area lies below sea level, reaching Italy’s lowest point in Contane, 3.90 meters below sea level. The abundant water supply from the Po River (each hectare of rice paddy requires an average of 3,000 to 5,000 cubic meters of water), a network of canals that facilitate its flow, and the peaty soil rich in organic matter (with values reaching 300%, compared to just 20% in the Novara area) make this territory particularly suitable for rice cultivation.

This is complemented by a farming technique that incorporates crop rotation, preventing soil depletion and preserving the nutrients that make Jolanda rice so rich and nutritious.
