Pampepato di Ferrara is a dessert with an interesting past, spiced with a pinch of history and fragrant spices that have nothing to do with pepper.

During the 17th century, the nuns of the Monastery of Corpus Domini in Ferrara, inspired by an ancient recipe invented by the great Renaissance cook Cristoforo da Messisbugo, created a dessert for the illustrious people of that time. Cocoa had just arrived to Europe thanks to Cortes and it was a luxury good, reserved to only a few people and added to food as if it were a precious powder.

Pampepato has a round shape and it is filled with high quality almonds or hazelnuts, tasty candied fruit, fragrant spices and it is covered in dark chocolate. That is how the "Pan del Papa" (the Pope's bread) was made. Easy to understand to whom this this marvel was dedicated!

This dessert is made for Christmas and the holidays, it represents Ferrara's wealth and refinement.
