Loggiato dei Cappuccini
Leaving the Cathedral behind and walking along Via Mazzini, you come across the suggestive Loggiato dei Cappuccini: a sequence of 142 arches supported by as many marble columns.
It was built at the behest of Cardinal Stefano Donghi in 1647 and later rebuilt after being destroyed by an earthquake.
At the beginning of the loggia, towards the city centre, stood the 18th-century church of San Carlo, now deconsecrated. Over the last two centuries, it has had a number of changes.
The portico leads to the ancient sanctuary dedicated to the highly venerated image of Santa Maria in Aula Regia.
