Although land reclamation has reduced their size, the marshes are still one of the largest lagoon systems in Italy. They cover an area of more than 11,000 hectares between Comacchio and the river Reno and are connected to the sea via canals. They form an environment of rare beauty within the Po Delta Park: in some places the stretches of brackish water are interrupted by rises in the land or divided by embankments and ancient sandbars, in others they extend freely like mirrors reflecting the ever-changing light of the sky.
The undisputed domain of rich birdlife, both sedentary and migratory, they offer a privileged setting for walks along the banks, excursions by boat and birdwatching.
The Comacchio Lagoons by Boat
A fascinating excursion along the inner waterways of the Comacchio Lagoon, to admire the beauty of a spectacular oasis, home to hundreds of species of water birds and a large colony of flamingos. An environmental guide will take you to the ancient fishing huts called “casoni”, to discover habits and traditions of the past. The tour includes a visit to the open-air section of the Museo Delta Antico, which houses a reconstruction of the Etruscan settlement of Spina.
CASONI
Ancient stone structures outline amidst canals, ponds and water basins of Comacchio Lagoons. These places were historically used as dwellings for those employed in fishing and guarding the lagoon from poaching fishermen. Once much more numerous and built with reeds and marsh grasses, as the years went by the number of casoni in the area decreased dramatically.
During the pontificate of Urban VIII, the Cardinal Legate of Ferrara, Francesco Cennini, purchased the Estensi's property Delizia delle Casette di Magnavacca in 1626 to demolish it and use its building materials to rebuild some casoni in brick
The number of casoni decreased over time to today's five fishing stations, the most important being Stazione Foce.
Today, the casoni are gems of history surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes, revealing to visitors the vicissitudes of the people who inhabited the area over time.
