It is the most significant example of the efforts made to protect the territory from flooding and is linked to the history of the land reclamation projects undertaken by the Este family in Ferrara in the 16th century.

Built in the 16th century, this example of hydraulic architecture features five basins on which a concave rectangular structure is built. Originally, the flow of water was controlled by a system of floodgates, but it lost its function as a drainage channel following the Taglio di Porto Viro. It therefore had a defensive and control function.

Today, the building is surrounded by a stretch of water and marsh vegetation, with lakes used for sport fishing, and is a pleasant destination for an excursion into nature.

How to get there by car: Ferrara-Porto Garibaldi motorway junction, SS309 Romea exit, towards Venice; continue on the SS309 for about 27 km, exit towards Santa Giustina-Goro; after about 3 km, turn right. About 85 km from Ferrara.
