They are the only remaining remnants of the ancient lagoons that once surrounded the town, spared from the most recent land reclamation works in the Mezzano area and designated as a Wildlife Protection Oasis.

The four lagoon inlets form a distinctive freshwater wetland biotope, unique in the area, especially for the abundance and diversity of animal life it supports. As many as 150 species of aquatic birds, both nesting and migratory, are found in the Vallette Lagoons. All species of herons can be observed here, including great white, grey, and purple herons, along with numerous wading birds such as the black-winged stilt, and birds of prey including the marsh harrier and the buzzard.

The vegetation is typical of freshwater wetlands, characterized in permanently flooded areas by reed beds, white and yellow water lilies, and flowering rush. Along the embankments grow white willow, water chestnut, and elderberry. The oasis is well equipped for a range of activities, including birdwatching, walking, cycling, and horse riding, as well as recreational fishing. An astronomical observatory is also located at the entrance.
