A treasure trove of art, faith, culture, and millennial history, Pomposa Abbey was described as “monasterium in Italia princeps” by Guido the monk, inventor of musical notation. It was also a center of learning, nestled in the heart of the Po Delta, a nerve center for pilgrims traveling to Rome. In 1001, the Abbey of Pomposa was awarded the title of Imperial Abbey, allowing it to reach the height of its prestige, increasing its power, but also becoming a center of prime importance for Christian spirituality and culture of the time. While Giotto left his mark in the frescoes of the abbey chapter house, no less significant is the figure of St. Pier Damiani, who lived in the Abbey of Pomposa with St. Guido degli Strambiati.
Lovers of ancient art should not miss the opportunity to admire one of the most precious cycles of Giotto-inspired frescoes in the entire province in the Basilica of Santa Maria, as well as the beautiful mosaic floor with precious marble inlays dating from between the 6th and 12th centuries.
ACCESSIBILITY: Users with motor disabilities can access all the rooms on the ground floor of the museum via ramps. SERVICES: Inside the museum, there are educational panels about the collections in several languages.
Chiesa di Santa Maria - Pomposa
The abbey church, preceded by a richly decorated portico in terracotta and marble, was built between the 8th and 9th centuries and resembles a late Ravenna-style basilica. The interior is divided into three naves by two rows of Byzantine-style columns topped with elaborate capitals. The floor, covered with mosaics from different periods and styles, is of great significance. Some parts are decorated with geometric elements, others with concentric circles, and others with phytomorphic elements and animal figures. The apse vault features a fresco of Christ in Glory surrounded by angels, saints, and the Virgin Mary, painted by Vitale da Bologna in 1351. Below the fresco are the Evangelists, the Doctors of the Church, and a cycle dedicated to the Stories of St. Eustace. The walls of the central nave are also covered with frescoes, works of the 14th-century Bolognese school, depicting stories from the Old and New Testaments in the upper section and scenes and allegories from the Apocalypse in the lower section. The Last Judgment is depicted on the interior wall of the facade.
