Massa Fiscaglia
There are several theories about the origin of the name Massa Fiscaglia. One of the most widely accepted theories traces Massa back to an ‘agglomeration of lands’, while Fiscaglia could derive from Finis Galliae, meaning ‘border of the territory of the Gauls’.
The historical roots of the town date back to the 9th century, when the village began to develop. During the Middle Ages, Massa Fiscaglia acquired a complex municipal structure, becoming an important centre subject, at different times, to the control of Ravenna, the Abbey of Pomposa and the city of Ferrara.
With the major land reclamation works of the 20th century, the town's economy underwent a profound transformation, shifting predominantly towards agriculture, which is still the driving force of the area today.
