During the first century A.D., the Romans settled mostly near rivers. The land between the Reno river, the Po di Vigarano river and Porotto was at first fiefdom of the Adelardi family, then of the Mainardis. The ancient Vigarano Mainarda once stood where there is now the town of Vigarano Pieve. It was build in its current area between the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. Vigarano Mainarda began its development after the channelization towards East of the Reno river.

Amongst the most interesting places of the municipality there is the Delizia Estense della Diamantina, with its 12th century tower.

During the land reclamation project carried out by Borso d'Este at Polesine di Casaglia between the late 1400’s and early 1500’s, the main building of the Diamantina was built around the 12th century tower. The overall construction was carried out in various stages and many changes and restructuring works took place over the years in line with requirements at any given time. The three-storey villa features paired windows. The turreted tower was modified in the 19th century and now features a Moorish-style three-lighted window leading on to white balcony supported by two columns.
