Codigoro was liberated on April 22, 1945, when the Germans left the town, blowing up the bridge over the Po di Volano river to hinder the advance of the Allies and taking some men with them as hostages. The war was over, but during the long months of the regime's agony, the prisons of Codigoro were filled with anti-fascists and people suspected of being involved in the Resistance. In the ‘fasanare’, the overcrowded prisons of Codigoro, the torture carried out by the infamous ‘De Sanctis gang’ was extremely harsh.

A lieu de mémoire: the Ticchioni Cell

Ludovico Ticchioni, a young activist, was imprisoned in cell no. 2. Displaced with his family to Serravalle and suspected of anti-fascist activity, he was arrested and spent 49 days in prison, undergoing interrogation and torture. At dawn on February 14, 1945, after being promised freedom, he was killed along with his friend Gino Villa in the square in Codigoro.

The sacrifice of Olga Fabbri

Among the victims of fascism is Olga Fabbri, a mother of five children who was tragically killed by soldiers of the Republic of Salò, who had taken her husband Bruno hostage. Seeing her husband being dragged away by the soldiers, Olga confronted them desperately pleading for his release, but was mowed down by a burst of machine-gun fire. It was April 22, 1945. When Giancarlo Pajetta awarded the medal in memory of Olga to her daughter Liliana, he told her that her mother's story would be the subject of an episode in the film “Rome, Open City.”

The Ticchioni cell has been renovated through the project “Redevelopment of the Ticchioni Cell and creation of a historical and cultural path of remembrance” and is located near the Municipal Residence, while the story of Olga Fabbri is commemorated on an explanatory panel in Piazza Matteotti, following the project “Destination Po Delta Parks”. Both projects were funded by the Emilia-Romagna Region.
