Voghiera
Gem that represents the roots of the land's history, between Ferrara and the Delta scenarios
Voghiera is located in a land that represents the roots of Ferrara's history, with the first padan settlements after the fall of Spina. This is where the Romans chose to build their centre below the Po river and where the first ferrarese diocese was born.
Voghiera, located on the right of the main ancient branch of the Po river - Eridano, has more ancient origins than the important Roman centre of Voghenza ("Vicus Aventiae"), on the other side of the river and owes its name to the Avenza river. Voghiera and Voghenza, one on each side of the Po river, were located near the big river island that today has become the Massari-Mazzoni park. Traditionally a holiday retreat for high society, over the centuries its territory was enriched by villas and patrician homes, starting from the 15th century, when Niccolò II of the Este family decided to build the Castle of Belriguardo in Voghiera, the first "Delizia" built outside Ferrara's city walls.
