Delizia del Verginese
Delizia del Verginese

The name Portomaggiore, coming from portus major, means a place on the banks of the Sandalo River, a branch of the Po di Volano.

Its strategic position in the middle of a dense network of waterways made it an important centre; it is a wealthy agricultural village renowned for its ancient fair, which takes place every year in September. Although the wars have put a strain on the historical and artistic treasures of the town centre, tourists are advised to take a stroll through the streets of the town, starting from the Town Hall, passing by the Concordia Theatre, the Gulinelli and Fioravanti-Vaccari palaces, and ending at the Chiesa della B.V. Madonna dell'Olmo. In the village of Gambulaga, the Chiesa Parrocchiale di S. Giorgiothe, designed by the renowned architect A. Foschini, and the Delizia del Verginese are of considerable interest. Don’t forget to visit the Anse Vallive di Porto – Bacino di Bando.
