Goro – A fishing port and the gateway to the Delta

Overlooking the Adriatic and lying between the sea and the Po Delta, Goro is today an important port for fishing and mussel farming and a starting point for numerous motorboat excursions exploring the Delta’s remarkable ecosystem.

The name “Goro” comes from Gaurus, an ancient branch of the Po River flowing from the Volano, a reminder of the area’s river-borne origins. The town began to develop in the early 18th century on the Po’s right bank, in what was then a marshland scattered with natural mounds. The first dwellings here were simple reed huts, later replaced by brick houses.

Today, Goro is a modern port that has managed to preserve the authentic character of a fishing village. Fishing and mussel farming remain the main economic activities, supported by a fleet of more than 2,500 boats. In recent years, the harbours of Goro and nearby Gorino have experienced increasing tourism: guided excursions depart from here through canals, lagoons, sandbars and nature reserves, offering an immersive journey into the heart of the Po Delta Park.

GORINO

Gorino, located near the mouth of the Po River at the far edge of the delta, is a charming fishing village founded in an area that, even in the mid-18th century, had not yet fully emerged from the sea. Its origins go back to a customs post that served as a tax office, provided housing for employees, and included a small chapel. The settlement only became permanent in 1870, when a few fishermen, previously present only sporadically, settled there with their families.

Today, Gorino is a picturesque, colourful village with a distinctive urban layout. The true heart of the community is its small harbour, from which numerous tourist boats depart to explore the Po Delta, navigating through channels, lagoons, sandbanks and expanses of water inhabited by herons, flamingos and many other bird species.
